This is the companion website for the book The Morley Families of Halifax, West Yorkshire by J.A.E. Morley and C.S.B. Morley.


This 700-page book features eight family groups (and counting) bearing the Morley surname, with each having ties to the Halifax/Calderdale area. The earliest branch dates back to the 1670s. At last count, there are over 1750 individuals named within, of which more than 500 were born with the surname Morley. In all, there are 233 unique last names.

The above preview features the immediate family of John Morley, Viscount Morley of Blackburn; his grandfather hailed from Mytholmroyd in the ancient parish of Halifax.


Other Morley descendants treated herein lived in places as diverse as:  co. Waterford, Ireland; Ontario and British Columbia; South Africa; Texas, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Arizona, California, Montana, Michigan and Florida; Tasmania; Portugal; as well as – closer to home – all over Yorkshire (Bradford, Ilkley, Morley and Churwell in Leeds, Eccleshill, Upperthong, Pontefract, Hemsworth and Wakefield) and all over Lancashire (Greater Manchester, Liverpool, Blackburn, Rochdale, Accrington, Todmorden and Ormskirk), not to mention Greater London.

Only deceased individuals are mentioned in this book; the privacy of the living is respected. But the development of this book requires input from living family members, and this site features a discussion board for this purpose.


Descendants of Cornelius Morley (1841-1911) and Susan Penrose Malcomson (1844-1884) of Milfort and Springfield in Portlaw, co. Waterford, Ireland are invited to join the Morley of Portlaw online community.


November 2012: Registration at this website will also get you access to a booklet entitled The Morley Families of Amounderness and Lonsdale, which covers the Morley families of Northwestern Lancashire, including Wennington, Lancaster, Over Wyresdale, Wray, Halton, Caton, Melling, Tunstall, Tatham, Hornby, Cockerham, Ellel, Pilling, Stalmine, Preesall, Garstang, Catterall, Chipping, Penwortham and Preston. Members of these families also lived in: Bentham; Thornton-in-Lonsdale; Liverpool; Stockport; Dukinfield; London; Methuen, Massachusetts; Springfield county, Ohio; Bradford, Yorkshire; Tranmere, Cheshire; Leek, Staffordshire; Windsor, Ontario and Greater Manchester. The book also covers Morley families originating in Blackburn Hundred, including the Morleys of Mearley township, Whalley.

Work is also underway on a booklet outlining other West Riding Morley families.
